Rye Bay Scallop Week

Rye Bay Scallop Week

The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn is in the centre of Rye, at the bottom of Mermaid Street.

It was built in 1592 and originally used as a warehouse for storing contraband seized from smugglers.

It is now an inn which has 10 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar downstairs, places to sit outside in the summer, the fireplace snug for the winter and another separate lounge area for people who are staying, giving a good mix of alternative spaces to sit and read the papers, eat, play games, etc, depending on what you feel like doing and it’s worth mentioning kids and dogs are welcome in all areas of the building.

All bedrooms are en-suite but each has its own personality so worth checking our website www.theshipinnrye.co.uk to see which you think will suit you best. Food in the most part is cooked from scratch – with the exception of things other people do better than us – like the bread which is from local artisan bakers, The Lighthouse Bakery. All of major suppliers are from around here – more information on these can be found in the Eat section of the site as well as examples of the menu, etc.

If you’re staying at the pub and get tired of being out & about there’s lots to do here – choose from Scrabble, Risk, a special Rye variation of Monopoly, dominoes, Jenga and a load of books and DVDs – spanning all interests from artistic films made by locally important people like Derek Jarman, the entire BBC series of Mapp & Lucia – shot here in Rye! as well as old favourites like Blithe Spirit, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie & Rebecca….but for the truly discerning, we’ve all the Die Hard & Rocky films ever made.

The type of food you can expect to find at the Ship is probably best described as a combination of straight forward pub dishes (with a bit of a twist), as well as some more adventurous specials. So expect the usual favourites such as a Ploughman’s, fish pie, breaded local cod with chips & smashed peas, the house burger – that sort of thing, as well as dishes like Rye Bay scallops (in season), local skate wing, rabbit & lentil broth.
